Meet MacGregor & Michael

We’re delighted to introduce Select Trail 2018 artisans, MacGregor & Michael, a celebrated British duo who make the most exquisite, handmade leather goods available in Great Britain today. Each piece is carefully cut and stitched in their atmospheric Tetbury workshop, in southwest Cotswolds, with each edge burnished for a fine, silken appearance.

Neil MacGregor and Valerie Michael pride themselves on the quality of their materials,  making sure that their fine leathers, threads, linings and fittings are the very best in quality and style while sourced in the UK and Europe.

They create all the designs themselves and sometimes work with other artisans. They collaborated with celebrated, local shoe designer, Caroline Groves, to make a series of gilded-leather handbags with wood and silver detailing. Our eye is drawn particularly to MacGregor & Michael’s simple Penny Bag (pictured), leather-covered trunks and carry seats.

“All stitching is by hand. We prefer the direct simplicity of hand tools and the quiet rhythms within our workshop. Developing as craftspeople often involves realising something fundamental about the nature of the leathers we work with. It requires us to be constantly updating and fine tuning our making skills to match the level of our ambitions and designs.”
